But as outside organizations take over the land for monocultures, or other uses, the Lisu often have to leave their farms for unfamiliar cities, where they must work for poor salaries. In “Skin Disease,” we respond to the building of a solar power station with performance art.
A skin disease in my memory, that feels like seeing a hole
Scratching deeper and deeper, scratching with no pause
Scratching deeper and deeper, strange liquid emerged from the hole
The sticky red, like the drink I bought at the supermarket
Like scraping glass back and forth with nails
Like a rainstorm hitting the tin roof
Like the wound is about to heal
Like grandmother suddenly left
